Completed our first yacht race of the summer on our friends boat, the rain stayed away and we had nice light breeze's, since it was our first race we took it easy and only put up the small jib and left the spinaker in it's bag, and I took the helm. After several passes of the committee boat we eventually figured out which flags they had up and managed to translate that into some form of course. We then waited for it to be our start time and headed for the line, timing was a little off as we were last across although not by much and we headed down on a broad reach to the first mark. We were quite pleased to find we were keeping pace with the other boats from our start, although I think we lost a bit of ground avoiding the tug that was coming up the river. At the first mark we were level with another boat but since they were inside of us we gave them room at the mark and after rounding it we headed down the opposite side of the course to the others on the windward leg as there seemed to be a little more wind that way, although we did lose some ground on the larger boats, after reaching the windward mark we had caught the back of the fleet that had started 5 minutes in front of us which was pleasing although we were losing a little more ground to the boats from our start. With one more downwind leg we seemed to peg the gap to the boat in front of us and after rounding the downwind mark we headed back toward the finish and we didn't seem to lose any more ground to the boat in front which was pleasing. Well we were last across the line from the boats we started with but it all worked out pretty well on the handicap as we came 5th out of 7 boats, so we were quite pleased especially considering it was our first race and we had only the small jib and no spinaker, so we now have a goal for the next race to improve on.
